Our lab works on various areas of research, from collecting research data to formulating and publishing research papers. Our lab is dedicated to discovering connections and contributing to the broader scientific community. We work directly with other scholars, institutions, and the local community to collect information that enhances our understanding of social, cognitive, and developmental processes.
With the lab, Sarah conducted research on how high school students and teachers perceive and use AI tools through interviews and surveys. She learned to coordinate research efforts, create study materials and administer data collection. She presented this work at the Western Psychological Association Convention 2025, the Yankelovich Center: Celebration of Graduate Student Research and Grantee Networking Event 2025, the UCSD Honors Poster Session 2025, and the UCSD Undergraduate Research Conference 2025.
Co-authors: Katrina Cloyes, Ava Gabrenya, Dr. Tal Waltzer, and Dr. Gail Heyman
With the lab, Ananya conducted research on how young people interpret everyday environmental actions, examining when personal vs. social behaviors are recalled. She explored how perceived impact and moral approval shape decision-making, norm inferences, and willingness to affiliate with peers. She presented this work at the SPSSI Annual Conference in June 2025.
Co-authors: Dr. Amy Eguchi, Alec Barron, Dr. Tal Waltzer, & Dr. Gail D. Heyman
With the lab, Jaynne conducted research about 10 to 13 year old's understanding of climate change, their feelings of individual and collective efficacy, their attitudes toward climate action, and their own climate actions. She presented this research at the Western Psychological Association Convention 2025, the UC San Diego Undergraduate Research Conference 2025, and the DevSCA Speaker Series 4.
The symposium included research talks & posters, free food & networking opportunities, flash talks by students & mentors, and much more! The symposium aimed at celebrating our high school interns, SCDL research assistants, and colleagues for all the hard work done throughout the year.
With the lab, Sylvia has presented and conducted research on the social aspects of ChatGPT and its integration into society, particularly on its impact on student life. Sylvia has had the opportunity to present at UC San Diego Lab Expo 2024, SPSP Annual Conference 2024, and CSUSM 30th Annual Psychology Student Research Conference, San Marcos, 2024.
With the lab,the AI team provides a comprehensive look at how generative AI tools like ChatGPT are being used in education. They highlight the potential benefits, challenges, and ethical considerations involved in integrating AI into teaching and learning. By synthesizing findings from over 80 articles and papers, we aim to inform responsible AI adoption in education and identify areas needing further study.
With the lab, Oscar presented in AdaptEDU workshop and CSU San Marcos conference. It investigates whether AI chatbots (such as Chat GPT) can replace human partners in peer instruction.
With the lab, Jiya's goal was to synthesize existing research across disparate disciplines (e.g., education, public health, politics) to understand how we develop, adopt, and express social norms. I conducted an extensive analysis of over forty peer-reviewed academic papers and used a standardized format to summarize the findings (key results and significant relationships) and conclusions (main takeaways and future implications) from each paper.
